The big question I posit, is Mashle just another magic-based anime?
Well, personally I wouldn't consider myself a fan of magic-based anime/manga, they really can get very repetitive and stale due to market saturation.
However, seeing as on release in Japan, Volume 1 of the manga sold out, it's fair to say it must bring something special to the vast table of magic-based shounen media.
After watching Season 1, and continuing into season 2, I think it stands out quite prominently from the others, bringing a rather unique main character to the table with Mash Burnedead. He may have gigachad levels of muscle, but they really made him roll a 20 on Strength and a 1 on Intelligence. And maybe a 12 on Charisma.
This, along with the wild situations he's forced into, results in antics that are satisfying to watch the cast's reactions. Maybe simple things please simple minds, but if it works, why change it?
The accompanying cast is rather tasteful, all unique and prominent characters, with their own designs that stand out. Most times in these shows, the story follows a low-lying romance, in order to maintain interest, maybe even raise fan-ships, but in this case, it takes it in a slightly different direction, another thing that breathes some fresh air into the genre.
Due to the similarity in the shows and characters, I find myself subconsciously comparing Mash to Asta from Black Clover, with an similarly dense mindset and similarly superhumanly strong body. But, in an arm wrestle, I'm sure Mash would win. They really made his physical prowess more impressive than fkn MAGIC, and I'm honestly here for it, those moments get me good.
Mash's story with having to fake it till he makes it, with all the drama that entails, this sorta story usually remains episodic, with little changing to the status quo, but Mashle doesn't disappoint or slow down, and remains to press through Mash's journey to become a Divine Visionary.
All in all, I'm saying you should give it a try, I think it's worth your time in general, if you're a casual weeb. I wouldn't compare it to blockbuster-level titles like Attack on Titan, but it's a strong situational comedy show,
I don't really know how to end this, so I'll just ask ya'll to post your comments on this first article of mine in the Discord, constructive critisim is appreciated.
Cheers for reading, and I hope you try the show out!
